Very rare romanian translation of Keynes influential and controversial 'impassioned outburst' against the Treaty of Versailles. It was Keynes's second book, which established his reputation as a leading liberal thinker outside the technical field of economics. He turned out in 1939-1945 to have foreseen the consequences of it in 1919: "if we aim at the impoverishment of central Europe, vengeance, I dare predict, will not limp". It is interesting to note that at the eve of World War II Keynes found it almost impossible to start a war in defence of Eastern Europe when some sort of peace would be offered to the West. The novelty and sacrilege of Keynes approach toward European peacetime governance was that he asked for a peace-maintaining economic perspective. His vision was a grand economic one which looked beyond old military enmities. These were vain hopes for 1919, however, and they remained utopian for more than thirty years to come. It is also interesting to note that there was a considerable proximity between some of Keynes activities in the wake of The Economic Consequences of the Peace and the activities of the leading international journalist/economist of Romanian origin in those days, David Mitrany (1898-1975). Keynes's biographer Robert Skidelsky relates that on 10 October 1925 Mitrany suggested to Keynes to become economics minister of Romania (!) an offer which Keynes declined. (For more information see the paper by Gerhard Michael Ambrosi, Keynes and Mitrany as instigators of European Governance, Trier 2004) Generally, in post war and pre-1989 Romanian economics, Marxism-Leninism was the official and unchallenged economic paradigm. One of the specific features of Romanian Marxism-Leninism was its complete dogmatism. Quite unsurprisingly, the impact of Western economic literature was rather limited. Romania never managed to get a set of Romanian translations of the classic economics authors standard texts. This translation is preceded by 2 pages with a special preface for this edition written by Keynes (in Romanian language) dated King's College Cambridge 12, November 1920 and at the end the translated preface to the French edition is also added. We found no copies called for of this romanian edition of Keynes's important second work in the relevant bibliographies and library catalogs we consulted. Paper covers and spine are slightly damaged and chipped at edges but generally in very good condition; the paper is browned, but the texts are clearly readable and there is a small dedication in lead-pencil on the French title.
