'The 'Aeneid' takes up three-quarters of the book. In chapters on the behaviour of dying men, on their last words, on the after-life, R. makes interesting comparisons between Homer and Virgil and the later Latin epic writers. The most important part of the book is the treatment of fighting in the 'Aeneid'. R, develops two classifications. The first, the large-scale motifs, 'Grossbilder', include Battle Beginnings, Individual Aristeieai, Semi-individual Aristeiai (...), Minor Duelas, Mass Battles, and Non-military Episodes, for example speeches and replies. (...) The second classification covers small-scale motifs, 'Einzelbilder'. These include co-ordinators (tum, hic), the names of one of both of the participants, characterization, the mention of weapons, the use of particular weapons, the wounding of parts of the body (...). R. has elaborate justifications of these two different classifications. (...) He seems to be justified in his claim to have provided tools which can achieve a new degree of precision and objectivity in our understanding of the narrative techniques of Virgil and his successors.'
