This treatise of Cicero was written hastily in late 44 B.C. in the political uncertainty which followed Caesar's assassination. (...) It is a difficult text, which is at the same time philosophical, political, and personal. It is one of the virtues of D.'s commentary that he successfully brings out all these elements. (...) As a historical, philosophical, and literary commentary, D.'s work is a considerable achievement. D. is concerned as much with the overall shape ot the treatise as with specific passages.
