A seminal work on the history of imprisonment\n4to, Illustrated with many tables and 4 engraved double-page plates by Bertrand, depicting plans and facades of correctional institutions. \n# In this innovative study, Vilain XIIII (1712-1777), proposes a new penal reform policy. In line with the ideas of the Enlightenment, he argues against corporal punishment in favor of imprisonment with hard labor, labor that would financially benefit the institution. He also proposes to reeducate criminals and learn them a trade, so they can fend for themselves once freed. Villain XIIII was also the first to write on the link between poverty and crime.
