A gem of a book showing the many beautiful and often stunning art forms of shells of mussels and snails from around the world. A general introduction is followed by 12 brief chapters discussing the age-long relationship between men and shells: scientific, religious, pre-Columbian, Middle Ages, heraldic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and Victorinan periods, the rise of malacology (study of the Mollusca), and the 20th Century. Followed by nearly 200 stunning images by photographer H. Landshoff: 82 tipped-in colour and numerous black and white photographs, including several double-page foldouts. Details, measurements and Latin names of all shells are given. Literature on marine molluscs and a list of illustrated mollusc shells are given at the end. Text is in German.
