In what may well be the first book on an African religion written 'from the inside', Susanne Wenger here recounts her acquaintance with the orisha-Yoruba gods and godesses -- after thirty years' residence in their Nigerian homeland. During taht stay -- which today continues -- she has become and important official in several of the cults and, even more notably, a vehicle for the renovation and perpetuation of the religion's sacred images: icons, shrines and sacred groves. As a founder of the 'New Sacred Art' group in Oshogbo, she encouraged ritually inspired artisans to create their own shrine-abodes for the threatened but still living orisha, in their own ancient forest sites.
