The focus of the book is on social history. We learn how parishioners built and beautified their churches, and joined guilds and pilgrimages to worship and socialise. We also hear of those who resisted the Church's claims by building rival chapels, avoiding religious obligations, and getting involved with vandalism and heresy. The book is thus a history of the people of Devon as well as their Church, over nearly 1200 years. |
