| Meer info | An historical-anthropological study is presented of the survival strategies of urban women in Bamenda, a town in the Central Highlands in North-West Cameroon, in the context of changes in the access to land. The findings support the hypothesis that as a result of urbanization and agricultural commercialization women's access to land has become restricted. Although the 1974 land law provided opportunities to acquire land individually by purchase, these opportunitities were beyond the reach of the majority of the women. It is shown that women who lost their land and who lack new alternative possibilities end up in a process of marginalization. Increasing stratification between groups of women is emerging as a result of women's differential access to productive resources. Uneducated mothers and widows in particular are vulnerable to marginalization because they are often unable to tap alternative sources to compensate for their loss of land.
