' "Happy is the life that starts with love and finishes with ambition", said Pascal.
The young Augustine experienced the first but quickly refused the second, and his real life began with the rejection of ambition and a farewell to earthly loves.
This fifth-century native of Romanized North Africa who wanted to become a monk was chosen as Bishop of Hippo; but despite having a heavy pastoral workload, he made space for polemical activity which generated the most heated doctrinal debates of his time. As a man of authority he had many obligations, and undertook many journeys, but het was still able to steal - often from a good night's sleep - the time necessary to compose immense works as both exegete and theologian. A writer of genius (with his famous "Confessions" he invented the genre of autobiography). Augustine had a profound influence on the thinking of the Middle Ages and assisted in the rediscovery of an ancient heritage during the Renaissance. HIs thinking continues to stimulate debate and discussion among today's theologians and philosophers.

This biography restores Augustine in all his complexity and depth. Addressed to an educated general readership, it places him against the colourful background of the Mediterranean world of antiquity, and explores the major influences, events and competing philosophies which were formative for his thought and theology.
The book makes available much important new material (and several significant new discoveries in Francophone scholarship) to English-dspeaking readers, who are invited to share in the author's intimate and sympathetic knowledge of this greatest figure of Christian antiquity.

Serge Lancel is Emeritus Professor of Latin Literature and Roman Civilization at the University of Grenoble.
A member of the Académic des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres de l'Institut de France, he is the author of "Hannibal" and of "Carthago" '.
