"When you first see Jay Mark Johnson's photographs, you are reminded of the finish line photographs used to determine winners at athletic contests, horse races, and other sporting events. In Johnson's work, as in the photo finish images, people, animals and moving objects are frozen against a background that has been resolved by the camera into horizontal bands of color that extend from edge to edge of the picture plane. This similarity is no accident, for both Johnson and the cameraman of the finish photographs use the same technology - slit-scan photography. As used by both, slit-scan is used to capture motion as it unfolds in time. In emulsion photography, a slit moves continuously along the film, exposing a piece each time to create an image that "freezes" the movement. With the highly sophisticated digital camera Johnson uses, the same effect is achieved with a "virtual" electronic slit, one pixel in width that scans the subject (which, like a race, is actually an "event"). In both cases, all movement occurring in front of the lens is summarized in a single image. The resulting photographs graphically capture the event occurring at that time, so that in Johnson's photographs a person may appear more than once in the same image (having caught up with the tracking motion of the slit), and objects become subject to an exaggerated form of the photographic phenomenon known as "focal-plane shutter distortion."
