| Meer info | Peepshow. Billmark, Carl Johan. A lithographed and hand-coloured peepshow (peephole view) measuring 12 x 13,5 cm (length unfolded 52 cm). It shows six scenes, four cut-out scenes and one scene in front and one scene on the back inside. Unfolded like a leporello it shows through the peephole the famous Promenade de Longchamp, which took place in Paris annually during the 19th century on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the Easter week. That was when spring fashion was shown and everyone was there. The scenery is filled with strollers on foot, riders on horseback and company in horse and carriage, street commerce, etc. The view extends from the bottom up through the Champs Elysee and to the Arc de Triomphe, which can be seen in the viewing cabinet. In fine condition. Not dated but probably made around the middle of the 1830s. On the front is printed "Billmark Sc." The Swedish lithographer Carl Johan Billmark was active in Paris from approximately 1833 and he stayed there for a large part of his life. He probably was the maker of this item. Mild traces of use. In good condition. |
