Priced 18s NET. 254 pp. 13 x 19,5 x 2,75 cm. 318 gr. Wrapper design by Broom Lynne. Part six of 'A dance to the music of time', a twelve-novel cycle. Powell’s monumental series, inspired by Poussin’s painting of the same name. The story is an often comic examination of movements and manners, power and passivity in English political, cultural and military life in the mid 20th century. "The words 'twelve-novel cycle' don’t exactly inspire readerly zeal in most people, but once you catch the rhythm of Powell’s dodecahedral masterpiece it’s hard to put it down. Beginning in the 1920 s, A Dance to the Music of Time follows the lives of a group of English friends and acquaintances as they make their various ways through life: meeting and parting, succeeding and failing, loving and hating, living and dying. There is ample room for both comedy and tragedy in this capacious, large-hearted work, but Powell’s real triumph is the way he catches the rhythm of fate itself, the way it brings people together, only to spin them apart, then reunite them later as near-strangers, transformed in unexpected ways by the intervening years." (Time 100). A fine copy in bright red cloth with gilt spine lettering in a near-fine dustwrapper with minor wear to the top and slight darkening of the spine. This is the sixth volume in the author’s Dance to the Music of Time series. A very nice first edition from this masterwork, of which 12,000 were initially issued. Text clean. Pages crisp. Binding tight. No inscriptions. Corners sharp. The dustjacket is well protected in a removable cover sleeve. Fine/Near Fine. Booknumber: 13447 |
