ARISTOPHANES (446 B.C. - 386 B.C.)
The Frogs and other plays Penguin Books, London. 1964. First Penguin Edition. Paperback. 223 pp. 11 x 18 x 1½ cm. 126 gr. Translated with an introduction by David Barrett. Penguin Classics L 152. The cover shows a detail from a Greek marble relief in the Louvre (Snark International). Present editors Betty Radice and Robert Baldick. Contains: The Wasps - The Poet and the Women - The Frogs Aristophanes was the last and greatest of the Old Attic Comedians. Eleven of his plays survive and this collection contains The Wasps, one of his earliest, The Poet and the Women (Thesmophoriazusae), a gem of parody and low comedy, and The Frogs, a comic masterpiece written under the shadow of defeat. The robust, satirical, and ludicrous entertainments have easily survived the prim disapproval of Aristotle, who thought them rough and vulgar. For Aristophanes has the knack of letting the modern reader tight into the spirit of Athens during de long, tragic war against Sparta. Offers insight into one of the turbulent periods in Ancient Greek history. This book is written during the Peloponnesian War, Dionysus descends to Underworld to bring back a poet who can help Athens in its darkest hour, and stages a debate to help him decide between the traditional wisdom of Aeschylus and the modernity of Euripides. A copy that has been read, but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact. The spine shows signs of wear. No inscriptions and no marks on pages. Pages yellowed. Good reading copy. BOOKNUMBER: 16241 |
