Louis-Mayeul Chaudon (1737-1817) was a French biographer. In 1767 he first published this famous response to Voltaire's 'Dictionnaire philosophique' and to the works of the Encyclopédistes. While acknowledging Voltaire's talents as a writer, Chaudon fiercely repelled his attacks on religion. He prudently kept his anonymity to escape Voltaire's sarcasm. On the publication of this work, he received letters from Pope Clement XIII, and later from Pope Pius VI.
