E.O. Nicolas Bergier (1718-1790) studied theology in Besançon and then continued his studies in Paris. Canon of Notre Dame de Paris, he was the confessor of Madame Adélaïde, daughter of Louis XV. He turned all his ideas to sacred criticism, mythology and history, and devoted himself to the defence of Christianity attacked by philosophers such as Rousseau and Voltaire, of whom he was a fierce opponent.\n8vo.
