| Meer info | This book is divided into three parts: 1. Changes to the Old Testament and attributed authorship; 2. An account of the major translations, ancient and modern; 3. Biblical commentators. Richard Simon was a French priest and Oratorian. He studied Hebrew and other oriental languages. Simon was influenced by the work of Isaac La Peyrere and by Spinoza. Simon's "Histoire critique du Vieux Testament, " was controversial, notably for its claims that Moses could not have been the author of many works attributed to him. By bringing the Old Testament under the gaze of scholarly criticism, Jacques-Benigne Bossuet and other Catholic theologians condemned the work. As a result, the work was censored, suppressed and the entire French printing seized by the police and publicly burned. The Oratory expelled Simon for his biblical criticism. The work remained on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum into the 20th century. See: Jonathan I.
