In the aftermath of early space flights, principles of law and international legal regulations in regard to that utilization were formulated by States under the auspices of the United Nations.From 1963 until 1992, six treaties governing the utilization of outer space were thus established. In these, matters of, e.g., jurisdiction and control of States over objects launched into outer space, as well as responsibility and liability for such activity, have been incorporated.These treaties tend to reflect the interpretation of the scientific developments of the time in which they were conceived, that is in the period between 1950-1970. Meanwhile, spaceflight has developed in such a way that the said interpretation is changing rapidly.This book aims at the clarification of the preparatory work for the treaties, the treaty texts themselves, as well as their interpretation up to the present. After an introductory chapter dealing with the background and history of the six treaties as well as some central issues of space law such as the common heritage of mankind doctrine and the principles of equity and equality of States, the six space treaties are analysed article by article.
