Otherwise decorated with engraved head- and tailpieces. The first French edition, after the Dutch second edition. De Lairesse (1640 (?) - 1711) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and art theorist. He was a highly regarded painter, but also revered for his treatises on art (the present book (Groot Schilderboek) and Grondlegginge der Teekenkonst), which were highly influential in 18th century painting. De Lairesse disregarded painters such as Rembrandt and Frans Hals because of their often everyday subjects. Instead he favoured the style of Karel van Mander for his lofty biblical, historical or mythological, subjects. Although celebrated during his life and the later 18th century, in the 19th century views on De Lairesse changed drastically. He was then seen as the reason for the decline of Dutch painting. For a more extensive biography, see Houbraken's \"De groote schouburgh der Nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen\" (available online in DBNL).
