- The concept of the "Gesamtkunstwerk" in the work of the revolutionary avant-gardist. Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) is considered a co-founder of abstraction and developed his own style of painting, leaving traditional forms of representation behind. Music played a decisive role in his artistic development as a means of expressing emotions. Following its example, Kandinsky sought a kind of grammar that allowed him to translate emotional states into non-objective compositions of color and form. The catalog explores the artist's exploration of the concept of the "Gesamtkunstwerk." In insightful essays, he explains the meaning of this term, coined by Romanticism, and traces Kandinsky's enthusiasm for music and theater. The volume presents his famous paintings. The spectrum ranges from works that Kandinsky created in the context of his exhibition program of the Blaue Reiter, which he founded with Franz Marc, to works influenced by the Bauhaus.
