Filmed along the banks of New York's Hudson and London's Thames rivers, Burki's project investigates the river as a place of passage, creating film sequences that lie somewhere between documentary and fiction. The subjects are the people who live and work along the banks and the places where people pass by the water's edge and wait. Over 80 people were filmed along the two waterfronts; in New York at the Staten Island Ferry, Battery Park, Pier 26 in Tribeca and Pier 84 in Clinton; in London at the Tate Gallery, Tilbury Docks and National Theatre. In London the work is shown on the National Theatre Lyttleton flytower rising 200 feet above the Thames. In New York City the work is shown along the Holland Tunnel New York River Ventilation Building, reaching 930 feet out into the Hudson. The accompanying CDs contain the entire \"soundtrack\" to the monumental oeuvre: the recorded conversations, memories and thoughts of the participants.
