Lieutenant Governor-General H.J. van Mook, the last Dutch proconsul in the former Netherlands Indies, tried to achieve an acceptable political solution of the problems emerging in Indonesia immediately after the end of the Japanes occupation. In the end Van Mook, a relatively liberalminded official, founded his policies crushed between the tenacity of the newly-proclaimed Republic of Indonesia, the pressure of conservative politicians in the Netherlands, the distrust between the Dutch and the Indonesians and the presence of international hostility to restoration of the colonial characteristics of pre-war days.\nUsing archival and other sources available in the Netherlands, Indonesia and Great-Britain, the author tries to unravel the complexities surrounding the events during the period 1945 to 1948, and shows that Van Mooks grandiose hopes of building a society based on the cooperation of all the races which wanted to make Indonesia their home were a chimera.
