?As one who has tried himself to find his way through the labyrinth of Mycenaean scholarship, I salute with envy McDonald?s achievement as solid, accurate, and above all clear. He is too modest about his own contribution, especially to topography. (?) the excellent line drawings make possible a wealth of illustration without excessive expense. The chapter bibliographies - nearly 100 items - are admirably selective. The connections with Homer, though unobtrusive, are extremely valuable. Archaeological terms are both explained on their first appearance and listed in a glossary. The index is full, accurate and useful. (?) A book whose defects are so minor can be warmly recommended as an indispensable guide, clearly and logically arranged, to Mycenaean scholarship, a well-deserved tribute to the successes of scientific archaeology, a judicious caveat against its excesses, an exercise in humility, and, as McDonald himself says, though, characteristically, without the first adjective, a fascinating ?historical whodunit?.?
