Language as sculpture - body as text - an artist's book as interface. Lawrence Weiner expands the immaterial realm of signs into the material realm of things by applying words to walls. He expands the medium of writing from the two-dimensional surface of paper to three-dimensional bodies or objects of space. He works with writing, which, as Freud said, is the language of absence. The absent things and beings, events and persons become at least symbolically present through the signs of writing. One could say that Lawrence Weiner's works are translations from one language to another, from the order of things to the order of words. Weiner is therefore not to be reduced to the status of a poet, but is a visual artist who, with the means of writing, expands the work of the painter and sculptor into new territories, continues it and translates it into new codes.
