What do we see when we look at a press photograph, what do we really see? Pictures in the press ‘cover’ reality in both senses of the word: they report on it and they cover it up. Although the press and television have globalized ‘depictions of the world’, they determine and control their interpretation by means of captions and commentaries.The catalogue traces these developments in a selection of works, ranging from the paintings and silkscreened renditions of press photographs by Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, and Malcolm Morley and the critical works of Dan Graham, Martha Rosler and Hans-Peter Feldmann to more recent forms of appropriation as in the work of Thomas Demand, Bruno Serralongue and others. Exploiting news images found in newspapers, on television and on the Net, these artists apply the techniques of picture journalism to their own work. With the distinction between information and entertainment, consumption and criticism, documentation and art becoming increasingly blurred, they investigate the meaning and use of images with a new incisive dynamic.
