A madman, disguised as a nun, makes his way to an apartment in Geneva, intent on murder. An Egyptian banker hears his death sentence decreed by fellow members of a gnostic brotherhood. A novelist confronts, in the flesh, a character he has created. More than ever the peculiar magic of Lawrence Durrell is at work in Sebastian, fourth in his \"quincunx,\" The Avignon Quintet. This novel is set mainly in Geneva and its environs, where Constance, a psychoanalyst, practices her profession while trying to come to terms with the end of a passionate love affair. The Egyptian Affad, or Sebastian, realizing that his attachment to Constance is a violation of the gnostic code, returns to Alexandria. There he learns that a letter prescribing his death has been mailed to Geneva and innocently intercepted by Constance. Durrell's story follows the trail of the letter as it falls into the hands of the madman Mnemedis.
