It is now recognised that we can understand the Renaissance more fully only by comprehending the systems of thought which prevailed and of which the emblem is part.This new work contains one hundred emblems chosen from those books produced between 1531 and 1647. A substantial introduction places the emblem tradition within the wider framework of literature, art and related disciplines, discusses the contemporary use of emblems, outlines emblem theory and analyses the meanings which lie behind both the emblems and the verses which accompany them.
