The list was seen as falsification early on, because the descriptions up to 1590 (Sixtus V) are quite correct, but those after that are generally not. This 'prophecy' was probably intended as an original attempt to get a certain cardinal, Girolamo Simoncelli, to the papal throne. But this 'fake old news' was not successful, another one was chosen. Nevertheless, the prophecy has been revived countless times with each election of popes, especially in modern times, because the current pope would be the last according to this list! The second publication in this 17th-century edition is an attempt to link Pope Clement X to the description 'De Flumine Magno'. The author tries to make it plausible that this expression refers to the river Tiber.
