All 137 etchings including 2 prints of Francesco Piranesi and Pianta di Roma e del Campo Marzo.\nThis large format size book on Piranesi etchings follows the first French Edition of 1803. The book includes full reproductions of all the 135 etchings of the 'Vedute di Roma' made by Giambattista Piranesi plus 2 etchings made by his son Francesco and the Pianta di roma e del Campo Marzo. This series is produced directly from a complete original Piranesi catalogue. (The Pianta will be a nine-fold inlay) together with a commetary by the architectural historian Dr. Gijs Wallis de Vries. \nTo draw us into wonderland, Piranesi adds a second frontispiece to the views of Rome, an entirely fictive capriccio. Etched with rippling chiaroscuro, a bridge spans a dry moat filled with antique debris. On it, two gesticulating figures are the only signs of life, but their existence is insignificant compared to the many statues and their lively expressions. A group of busts of effeminate men seem to mock Dea Roma, the goddess of Rome, whose statue occupies the centre of the plate. She has clearly failed to preserve the eternal city from its fall! Behind her a temple emerges out of white smoke, in ruin, invaded by nature.
