In its expression of the cruel workings of history, sexuality and fate on its beautiful, tragic heroine, Tess of the D'Urbervilles is one of the most moving and poetic of Hardy's novels. Tess Durbeyfield is driven by poverty into the service of her wealthy 'relations'. Her lowly position leads her to become the victim of her 'cousin' Alec, her seducer and her nemesis. When she marries Angel Clare, who is himself far from innocent, she confesses her past, but he cannot find the forgiveness than she has offered him.Hardy once said of Tess 'I have not been able to put on paper all that she is, or was, to me', but, when the novel first appeared in 1891, critical opinion was sharply divided about Hardy's assessment of his heroine as 'A Pure Woman'. In her illuminating Introduction, Margaret Higonnet discusses Hardy's ambiguous and multi-layered characterization of Tess and the way in which this shapes other aspects of the novel. Based on the three-volume first edition, this new Penguin Classic also includes as appendices; Hardy's Prefaces, The Landscapes of Tess, The Graphic Illustrations and episodes censored from the Graphic periodical version.
