Tibetan Medical Paintings presents a hitherto unknown set of paintings found in Buryiatia that illustrate a famous 17th century medical treatise. The complex system of prevention and care outlined in them has been in use since the eigth century and is still practised today in parts of Tibet, India, Nepal, Ladakh, Bhutan and Mongolia. Tibetan medicine might have remained obscure had it not been for Sangye Gyamtso (1653-1705), regent of the Great Fifth Dalai Lama and founder of the monastic medical school of Chakpori in Lhasa, who integrated its complex and diverse wisdom into a coherent body of knowledge. The roots of this rich system of treating the body are depicted in 76 brilliantly coloured, highly detailed paintings, which illustrate the treatise and are the focus of this edition.
