This volume contains four plays by Sophocles (496-406 B.C.), who was the first to give to ancient Greek drama a structure recognizably related to its modern descendant. In 'Electra' he objectively presents part of the Orestean legend, while 'Women of Trachis' is remarkable for the human verisimilitude imparted to a near-repulsive piece of mythology. 'Philotetes' portrays the struggles of right against might, and 'Ajax' takes for its theme that of the great man fallen.
