Abraham Israel Drëyfuss (d.1819) was born in Rixheim, Alsace in the northeastern part of France. Abraham and his wife, Brändel Meyer suffered persecution during the turmoils of the French Revolution. In 1798 the Drëyfuss family was forced to move into French controlled Mulhouse. The family prospered and became French to the point that they changed their name to Dreyfus. In 1859 Alfred Dreyfuss (1859- 1935) was born in Mulhouse to a family of seven other siblings. In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 France lost the Alsace to a unified Germany but the Dreyfus family remained loyal to France. While most of the family remained in Mulhouse, Alfred joined the military and became an officer. The family was shaken by the tragedy of the accusations of espionage against Alfred and his subsequent exile to Devil's Island but remained firm in their support of France. Members of the family fought for France in both World Wars and the Dreyfus family suffererd greatly during the Nazi occupation of France. One of Alfred's granddaughters died in the concentration camp at Auschwitz-Berkinau. Descendants of Abraham and his progeny live in France and other parts of the world.
