The Measurement of Presence\nIris Kensmil and Remy Jungerman\n176 PAGES - 30 X 21.8 CM - SOFTCOVER - ENGLISH EDITION - ISBN: 978 94 9267 780 8 - € 30\nFor the Venice Biennale 2019, Benno Tempel,\ndirector of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag\ncurated the exhibition The Measurement of\nPresence, in which he combines installations\nby Remy Jungerman with wall paintings and\npaintings by Iris Kensmil.\nThe Measurement of Presence is a\ntransnational presentation that explores\ntraditions and the past, bringing them into\ncontact with the present. Jungerman and\nKensmil gather influences from different\nbackgrounds.\nRemy Jungerman is interested in the path\ntravelled by patterns. In his work he combines\nmotifs from Africa, Maroon culture, and\ntwentieth-century modernism. Iris Kensmil\ninvites us to expand our consciousness on\nutopian twentieth-century avant-garde and\nintroduces us to Black female activists and\nartists who have been neglected for too long.\nThis sensitive and critical stance towards\nabstraction and modernism is what connects\nthe work of Jungerman and Kensmil. In\ntheir work they combine the inspiration\nthey draw from twentieth-century utopian\nabstract art – in particularly Mondrian and\nDe Stijl, the Russian avant-garde and stanley\nbrouwn – with elements of other traditions\nand positions. In so doing, they size up the\nworld. They explore how the presence and\nvisibility of spirit and history are necessary\nto exist. The exhibition also interacts with\nthe architecture of the pavilion, designed by\nRietveld.\nThe book is published on the occasion of\nThe Measurement of Presence. The Venice\nBiennale 2019 takes place from 11 May ‘till 24\nNovember.
