This is the first substantial book on Shonibare. Besides photographic material of his main output from 1994 onwards, it contains essays by experts exploring important background aspects of his work, like the trade in Dutch wax fabrics, the history of the dandy, the leisure of the Victorian aristocracy and the rise of modernism in Nigeria. Furthermore, an interview with the artist focuses on how Western art has influenced his work. |
