John Gould (1804-1881), ornithologist, explorer, and accomplished natural history artist, had few rivals in his own field during the nineteenth or any other century. The value of his original works reflects his reputation today. Apart from numerous books and nearly three hundred scientific papers, Gould produced some three thousand illustrations for forty-one folio volumes. The text for this edition of Birds of New Guinea has been written by Abram Rutgers - a leading Dutch ornithologist and author of over twenty books.
