How can we scientifically define the status of literature: by the text and the arrangement it makes of a story, or by variable references to psychology, morality or philosophy? As often in the history of science, the answer supposes changing the ground in which to anchor the questions. This is what Tynianov does: operating the first metalliterary shift of our century, he establishes that, specifically, literature is neither text, nor psychology, nor sociology, nor morality, nor philosophy. The ideality of literary construction, exposed by him under the term of constructive principle, thus marks the birth of a science in its modern state: poetics. Transcending in relation to the linguistic material of the work, the constructive principle can only be established on the basis of a synchronic communication between author and readers: poetics is therefore a theory of literary relativity. We follow here the formation of this new hypothesis in Tynianov's thought, and we shed light on it by the translation of three unpublished texts in French.
