It was in Singapore in 2012 that photographer Anaïs López first encountered the Javan mynah, a small black bird with a yellow bill and legs, a prominent crest and a loud, raucous call. It was this call outside her hotel room that first attracted her attention and which, she soon found out, is one of the reasons why the bird is hated by most Singaporeans. Intrigued, Anaïs began to investigate and a project was born. ‘The Migrant’ is the story of one bird's remarkable journey – told through the character of Mynah – from Indonesia to Singapore and later to London, where it became homesick and stopped singing. Years of relocation and persecution followed. But the project also tells a wider story about our treatment of animals, social engineering and our attempt to shape an ideal society. At the same time, it is a metaphor for our relationship with 'the migrant'. In this layered project, López uses audio, video, text and photography to take you on an unprecedented journey. She combines working as a photographer for various magazines with making her own long term photo documentaries.
