= Bookbindings of simulated batik were supplied by various publishers and to our knowledge exclusively in The Netherlands and in the Dutch Indies from ca.1920-1930, still during the Dutch colonial period of Indonesia. The series Meulenhoff's Kleine Boeken van groote schrijvers consisting of Dutch and foreign novels translated into Dutch - only partly relating to the Dutch Indies - is one of the biggest series that was issued in different tastes and values of bindings; the most exclusive version being the batik-style binding with the top edges gilt. Authors include P.C. Boutens, Louis Hémon, Henrik Ibsen, B. Kellermann, M.C. Kooy-van Zeggelen, Arthur van Schendel, Arthur Schnitzler, August Strindberg, Oscar Wilde, Augusta de Wit. Batik publishers’ bookbindings are quite rare and hard to obtain - to establish a collection is especially hard because there is no bibliography listing these books. Our wild guess would be that no more than a hundred or so books were bound in batik. These binding motifs were inspired by actual Indonesian batiks, but were in fact produced mechanically in a great variety of motifs by the Leidsche Katoenmaatschappij (1836-1936), unlike traditional batik, which was actually made by hand with hot wax.
