This is considered to be García Márquez's first novel (if you discount Leaf Storm and No One Writes to the Colonel as just long short stories). The setting for this magical realism novel is a nameless village in Colombia. But Marquez’s writing really makes it a village in any country of the world. In Evil Hour was first published in 1962, and written just before One Hundred Years of Solitude. Some of the characters that are introduced in La Mala Hora will reappear (more splendidly) in Cien Años de Soledad. The story revolves around a sleepy, rain-drenched, heat-soaked Colombian river town possessed by evil. Lampoons have been appearing around the town, carrying texts that reveal the inhabitants' shameful secrets. |
