Australia’s leading nature photographer and filmmaker, Harold Pollock, recalls his encounters with two lyrebirds: Theresa, a female Superb Lyrebird near Sydney, and Wanderer, a male Superb Lyrebird from Sherbrooke Forest in Victoria. Telling us in entrancing detail the story of Theresa’s raising of her chick and of his association with Wanderer. He describes the life history of the Lyrebird and gives an account of its outstanding powers of mimicry. As proof of this, inside the front cover is provided an EP record, which gives us on Side One delightful recordings of the Superb Lyrebird and of the Albert Lyrebird. Side Two lists separately fifteen imitations, ranging even to the barking of a terrier. The record concludes with a recognition test. With four pages of b&w photographs and full descriptions of the recordings.
The scientific significance of Pollock’s work - who released a large number of films and sound recordings of Australian wildlife - is emphasised by prominent Australian poet, conservationist, and activist Judith Wright in her foreword to this little but fascinating book and record.
