In the twelfth century, art in the Maasland region flourished. The renowned metalworkers, in particular, left their mark on the development of the visual arts. Sculpture also reached a high level. Much of this sculpture has been lost. However, in Maastricht's two large churches, St. Servatius and the Church of Our Lady, a considerable amount of sculpture can still be admired in their original locations. Elizabeth den Hartog, an expert on Romanesque architecture and sculpture in the Maasland region, was commissioned by the Bonnefantenmuseum to undertake the monumental task of compiling the first-ever overview of all Romanesque sculpture in Maastricht: that in the two churches and that in the museum, where many fragments, particularly from the Church of Our Lady, have ended up after restorations.
