The Dixieland jazz group Medicare 7, 8 or 9 is unique in University of Illinois history. Originally consisting mainly of gray-haired faculty members, the band gave what it thought was its first and only performance in 1969 as a \"peace offering\" to help ease the tension so prevalent on college campuses throughout the country during the Vietnam era. Twenty-seven years later, with thousands of performances under its belt, and a roster of nearly 135 alumni musicians, the band, and the beat go on.
