Discusses the lives and teachings of six pre-Nazi racial hygienists in Germany and Austria. Wilhelm Schallmayer confined his crusade to eugenics, resisting efforts to win him over to racism or antisemitism. Alfred Ploetz, founder of the Gesellschaft für Rassenhygiene, originally favored racial mixing but later advocated racial purity; his follower, Ernst Rüdin, was ambivalent toward Nazi racial policy. Fritz Lenz, author of a textbook on human genetics studied by Hitler and other Nazis, welcomed the Nazis' eugenics program but had reservations about their claim to determine race by measurable characteristics, and about their methods, including persecution of the Jews; however, he never openly protested. Willibald Hentschel, who saw the Jews as \"declining life\" as opposed to Nordic \"ascending life\", was active in the antisemitic movement of the 1880s-90s and later joined the Nazi Party. Jörg Lanz von Liebenfels, publisher of the \"Ostara\" pamphlets, emphasized the purity of the Aryan race and the inferiority of mixed races, including Jews. From the 1920s on he became a virulent antisemite.
