This book treats the beginning of the Western musical tradition. Beginning with a discussion of the music of classical antiquity, it moves on to a consideration of the place of chant in the music of Christian antiquity and the early Middle Ages. There is discussion of the place of music in the courts and the cities of the Middle Ages, and discussion of the main repertories of the later Middle Ages according to the cultures in which they arose: the Italian Trecento, the French Ars Nova, the early English polyphonic tradition, for example. Finally, the changes in society and in music at the close of the Middle Ages are drawn together in an extended chapter by Reinhard Strohm.
