THE JEW AND ADOLF HITLER*

According to conservative estimates, six million Jews were systematically murdered in Europe between 1939 and 1945. There can hardly be any doubt that one man was the driving power and thus, in a moral sense, responsible¹ for this mass murder, the uniqueness and magnitude of which is but feebly reflected in the term genocide created to meet the very novelty of the crime. It is of psychological and of historical interest to look for the answer to the question: why did Adolf Hitler kill six million Jews?

No general discussion of anti-Semitism, or of such political or economic rationalizations as have been offered by Hitler himself, by some of his biographers, or by observers and historians of National Socialism, is intended here. The presentation aims solely at investigating the origin of such a violent and all-pervading anti-Semitism in an individual, by psychoanalytic interpretation of biographical data. This case study is no more than a small contribution to the urgent problem of the anti-Semitic character that at present is being investigated on a large scale by qualified experts.²

The main difficulty with this study is the paucity of material about the emotional development of Adolf Hitler. Available data are mainly of three types: factual material obtained by several reliable biographers; the frankly autobiographical sections of Mein Kampf; such utterances in Mein Kampf as reveal some of Hitler’s fantasies. ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE EGO AND SUPEREGO*

In resuming contact with psychoanalytic writing in other countries, after many years of separation enforced by the war, I am struck by the varieties of directions in which research work has been extended. One line of investigation, however, seems to me the most prevalent: there is an increasing interest in the development of the ego and superego. Many authors lay stress on the influence of environmental elements connected with the formation of the ego. Psychoanalysis has shown from the very beginning how important external experiences are for the development of personality. But unfortunately many authors who stress the importance of environmental factors seem to overemphasize their influence and neglect or underestimate the importance of internal psychic processes. Sometimes they even go as far as to deny the eminent significance of id-drives, especially of infantile sexuality on the ego and superego formation (Horney, Fromm). Our daily analytic work shows us regularly the interplay of internal and external events on the ego. These experiences force us to study the growth of the individual as a biologically based dynamic process, which is certainly influenced by social circumstances.

As far as I can see the psychology of the social development of groups, nations and even of mankind in general must be regarded from the same point of view. Highly influenced by climate, economics, social life and political circumstances the development

LEWIS CARROLL’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND*

The life of Lewis Carroll is the story of a Wonderland which he created for Alice and shared with her, the Dormouse, the Mad Hatter and the March Hare. Yet Wonderland was also a real world; a land of wonder may be a world in which the imagined is real and the real sometimes imagined, while people assume a dual role. The imaginative story is not only a product of creative genius, for creation, but also serves a purpose for the author who is his own first audience, and the fantasy of Lewis Carroll is only intelligible after study of his life plus a consideration of what he was trying to achieve when he wrote the nonsense stories intended for children but now so jealously cherished by adults.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland have become world property and the story has been published in France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Sweden, Spain, and Holland. It was printed in Arabic and Chinese, although the book was banned in Hunan province because the Chinese felt that the human personality was degraded when animals were given the power of speech. The story was immediately popular in America and Great Britain and an American collector paid $150,000 for the original manuscript while over 400,000 people visited a display of Carroll manuscripts when they were exhibited in Philadelphia.

The world appeal of the fantasy of Lewis Carroll suggests that the story has values beyond entertainment for children or mere story telling, for the themes of Alice’s adventures have been used in the adult world of motion picture, ballet, and the ice show. The characters have appeared in advertising and our speech reflects adopted phrases. Stuart Chase used quotations from the book as chapter headings in a book about the never-never land of economics.
