\"During the last twenty or thirty years the whole field of Greek History has been the subject of much patient and intensive research, carried on by classical scholars, excavators and archaeologists. Not merely has new light been shed upon old problems, but fresh aspects of Hellenic life, economic and social in particular, have been studied as never before. The results of such study and research have hitherto been widely scattered among various periodicals, pamphlets or monographs; but the publication of the Cambridge Ancient History has lately brought a part of them at least within the more convenient compass of a connected tale. That work, however, is not primarily intended for the reading of younger students, and its many volumes would make it, in any case, unhandy for their use.
