'Philosophy in the Flesh: The Embodied Mind and Its Challenge to Western Thought', by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, is a landmark work in cognitive science that argues our most abstract thoughts are rooted in our physical experiences.
The book seeks to dismantle the traditional Western philosophical view of the "disembodied" mind. The authors argue that because our brains and bodies have evolved for physical survival and movement, our reason is not a separate, transcendent faculty. Instead, it is "embodied," shaped by the sensors and motor systems of the human body. By analyzing how we use metaphors (e.g., "time is a resource" or "affection is warmth"), they demonstrate that we understand complex concepts through the lens of basic physical experiences. Controverisally, the authors claim that 2,500 years of "armchair philosophy" (from Plato to Kant) is fundamentally flawed because it ignores the biological and cognitive reality of how the human brain actually functions. Reason is not a pure, abstract process but is inextricably linked to our physical sensorimotor systems. Most of our thought processes (up to 95%) happen beneath the level of conscious awareness, influenced by "primary metaphors" learned in childhood through physical interaction with the world. Moreover, complex ideas like morality, time, and causation are built out of simpler, physical metaphors. For example, we often conceive of "purpose" as a "destination" along a "path." Although the book is hailed as a "magnum opus" of second-generation cognitive science, not surprisingly it has faced significant scrutiny from traditional philosophers. However, other critics praise the book for its "bold declaration" that science can finally answer age-old philosophical questions. It is credited with bringing a much-needed biological perspective to the study of the mind. |
