Since its inception in 1973, this annual series of original papers in analytic group therapy has been hailed for its extraordinarily comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of developments in this field. This latest volume recognizes the growing importance of family therapy and the Editors have devoted more attention to this area. Accordingly, the series title has been changed from Group Therapy – An Overview to the present title.

The 1980 volume is dedicated to H. Peter Laqueur, whose pioneering work in multiple family therapy vividly demonstrates the fruitful integration of group and family therapy. The first part includes reflections on Laqueur’s personal life and professional innovations, as well as his paper on The Theory and Practice of Multiple Family Therapy and a complete bibliography of his work.

The second section on Theoretical and Clinical Issues in Group Therapy covers a number of issues of special relevance to the group therapist: the group-as-a-whole approach, acceptance as a factor in the treatment of narcissism, individual and group resistance, constructive emotional interchange, empathy in group therapy and more.

The next section focuses on Treatment of the Borderline and Narcissistic Patient in Group Therapy. This is an area of growing importance, since therapists are finding that a combination of individual and group therapy is especially effective with these difficult patients.

Specialized Approaches to Group Therapy includes chapters on leading adolescent therapy groups and on overcoming barriers to communication in group therapy with total strangers who speak a different language and have a different cultural background.

The next section covers critical problems and co-therapy issues in Supervision in Group Therapy.

The expanded section on Theoretical and Clinical Issues in Family Therapy makes available 14 papers covering a wide range of topics: clinical implications of recent research, short-term family therapy, balance theory, problem-focused brief family interaction psychotherapy, family networking, hypno-structural family therapy, self-confrontation techniques, and much more. Specific clinical approaches and techniques are presented for working with violent families, families with an autistic child, and stepfamilies.

The final section contains abstracts of significant journal and anthology articles on group and family therapy published in 1979.

This volume offers both group and family therapists an especially useful overview of recent developments in these increasingly important fields.

Percy Werners (Antilliaans Surinaamse psychiater)
Dr. Percy Werners was een psychiater van Antilliaans-Surinaamse afkomst, actief in Nederland. Hij was gespecialiseerd in geestelijke gezondheidszorg en zette zich in voor de oprichting van instellingen voor mensen met verslavingsproblematiek en verstandelijke beperkingen.
Hij speelde een belangrijke rol als mentor en voorbeeldfiguur voor latere generaties psychiaters, onder wie Glenn Helberg, die hem noemt als een cruciale invloed op zijn visie op transculturele psychiatrie.
