1000 Nudes offers a comprehensive overview of the history of erotic and artistic nude photography between 1839 and 1939. Drawing on some 1,000 carefully selected photographs from Uwe Scheid?s collection, the book explores the development of the photographic representation of the human body. The publication covers both artistic studio photography and popular and clandestine productions such as erotic postcards, pin-ups, glamour photographs, naturist photography and early experimental images. The images not only illustrate the evolution of photographic techniques and aesthetic movements, but also reflect social norms, prohibitions, desires and cultural taboos across a century of visual history. Uwe Scheid (1944-2000) was a German collector who specialised in historical erotic and artistic photography. His collection grew to become one of the most important private collections in the field of early nude and erotic photography.
