To know an artist's background and the influences which have contributed to his or her work is one method of coming closer to an understanding of that work; another is to see the processes of its creation. This book provides both those opportunities: it reproduces 76 drawings, and drawing may be described as a process of sculpture; and it contains an autobiographical essay by Barbara Hepworth in wich she discusses the way in which landscape has influenced het sculpture, and relates the creative process to landscape and the people who inhabit it. This is a unique and revealing document illustrated by photographs of her native Yorkshire, of Greece and Cornwall.
The drawings -20 of which are reproduced in colour - span the full range of the artist's career, and include several recent drawings published here for the first time. They are - in the words of Bryan Robertson -'radiant and optimistic, the geometry of humanism'. Alan Bowness, critic and lecturer at the Courtauld Institute, University of London, has contributed a scholarly introduction to this important collection, in which he shows the close relationship between the drawings and Barbara Hepworth's sculpture. |
